Established in 2000, Chiles has become one of the most successful Advanced Placement programs in Florida. Our Advanced Placement Program gives students an opportunity to take college-level courses and exams while in high school. We currently have 25 AP courses in 7 departments. Students enjoy the challenge of taking AP courses with our highly trained faculty and academically driven classmates. Colleges and universities recognize that applicants with AP experience are much better prepared for the demands of college courses. Graduates of AP course work have earned AP credit that has allowed them to take a double major in college, move into upper-level courses in their field of interest, and complete their undergraduate degrees in less than four years.

Our Advanced Placement Program has a two-prong approach: AP courses for 10th-12th grade students and the AP ACCEL program for qualified freshmen. We currently have over 600 students taking one or more AP courses, and over 150 freshmen are enrolled in our AP ACCEL Program. Students apply to take AP courses in the early spring: however, students in our AP ACCEL Program are selected when they are still in 8th grade based on their high grade point average and performance on the 7th grade FCAT (or other available standardized test).

What is the Advanced Placement Program?
The Advanced Placement Program was initiated in 1955. Sponsored by The College Board, The Advanced Placement Program (AP) enables students to pursue college-level studies while still in high school. Based on their performance on rigorous AP examinations, students can earn credit, advanced placement, or both, for college.

Currently, AP courses are taught in approximately 60% of U.S. high schools. In those schools, more than 840,000 students took AP exams in 2001, and the number increases each year. Most colleges and universities in the US, as well as colleges in 28 other countries, have an AP policy granting incoming students credit, placement or both for qualifying AP examination grades.
The AP Program is best known for giving high school students the opportunity to earn college credit, to save on college tuition, and even to graduate early from college. But AP offers students many additional benefits as well.

+ AP allows high school students to take courses that are challenging and rigorous- exactly the kinds of courses they will face once in college.
+ AP prepares students to succeed in college.

+ Our AP program began in 2000-2001 with 4 courses.
+ We are currently teaching 25 different Advanced Placement courses
